Jeffrey Goldberg: Our Man in Havana, or, the Strange Case of Alan Gross
By Jeffrey Goldberg
February 13, 2012
It's quite a weird story, the arrest and conviction of an American government contractor, Alan Gross, by Cuban authorities for the crime of "undermining the integrity" of the state, and it's just gotten weirder, thanks to the investigative work of the AP's Desmond Butler. Gross is an American Jew who was sent to Cuba by a U.S. Agency for International Development-funded contractor to supply Cuba's tiny Jewish community with communications equipment. The ostensible purpose of this mission was to help connect the 1,500 or so Jews still in Cuba with their brethren outside the country. The Cubans suspect something far more dastardly. The truth is.... not entirely clear. More...

By Salim Lamrani, with contributions from Wayne Smith
http://cipcubareport.wordpress.com/2012/01/17/the-cases-of-alan-gross-and-the-cuban-five/
The way may be opening for increased U.S.-Cuban ties. The United States has removed all restrictions on Cuban-American travel from the U.S. to Cuba and all limitations on Cuban-American remittances to families on the island. Coming at a time when the Cuban government is encouraging the establishment of small private enterprises, this opens the way for importantly increased ties between the two communities-as one observer put it: “for an inflow of capital from the U.S. to Cuba.” More...
