Jose Marti's Ideas Spread Internationally

CUBA, January 30, 2008.-The movement to study the ideas of Jose Marti has widely extended internationally. In that way Marti's thoughts contribute to finding solutions to contemporary problems, mainly in Latin America: by promoting integration, alerting of US expansionism, and warning of the need to be better educated, and thus, freer.

Numerous universities and other educational centers are studying Marti in countries including Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Spain and France, with the United States to be added soon, informed Hector Hernandez Pardo, coordinator of the Global Council of the Jose Marti International Solidarity Project sponsored by UNESCO, which met in Havana on Tuesday as part of the Second International Conference on World Equilibrium.

It's not just about a group of persons attracted by the legacy of Cuba's national hero, but instead a movement that with certain institutional support carries out investigations, publishes and teaches courses.

French intellectual Jean Lamore, who wrote the first biography of Marti in French, said another task lies in trying to spread Marti's thinking, without distortion, in the United States, where an open public is waiting for it.

Tuesday's session at the conference began with a lecture by Armando Hart, director of the Marti Program Office, in which he emphasized applying the ideas of Marti to politics, education and human development.

A moving moment in the program came when Maria Eugenio Lopez, a professor from Mexico, handed Hart a bronze statue of Mexican national hero Benito Juarez made by sculptor Gustavo Martinez, as a gift to Commander in Chief Fidel Castro. (Cubaminrex-RHC)

International Conference for World Equilibrium
President of Cuban Parliament Closes International Conference for World Equilibrium

CUBA, January 31, 2008.- The president of Cuba's Parliament, Ricardo Alarcon, urged those who fight for a better world to create new alliances in this time of unity when the ideals of Cuban National Hero Jose Marti are more valid than ever.

During the closing ceremony of the 2nd International Conference "For World Equilibrium" on Wednesday in Havana, Alarcon referred to Marti's presence in the Cuban Revolution, even since the organization of struggle against Batista's dictatorship in the early 1950s.

He also referred to the participation in the event - with their ideas and solidarity - of five Cuban political prisoners - internationally known as the Cuban Five - who have been unjustly imprisoned in the United States for more than nine years already for fighting against terrorism.

The Cuban legislator criticized the US government that, in spite of the current situation of hunger and illiteracy that prevails in many regions of the world, continues with its crazy ideas of world domination and its military race.

More than 400 delegates and guests from 35 countries who participated in the conference, which began last Monday, sent their best wishes to Cuban President Fidel Castro and supported the final declaration of the event which, among other aspects, establishes January 31st as Day of Latin American and Caribbean Identity.

The First International Conference "For World Equilibrium" was first held in 2003 and it was scheduled to take place every five years. (Cubaminrex-RHC)

Cuba's Foreign Trade Continues to Grow

Havana, October 31 .- Cuba's commercial exchange with the world grew 27 percent during the first nine months of this year, compared to same period in 2005, according to Cuba's Foreign Trade Minister, Raúl de la Nuez. He spoke during the inauguration of the 24th Havana International Trade Fair on Monday, which was attended by Vice President Carlos Lage Davila.

By the end of the year, Cuba expects to close commercial operations valued at 10 billion dollars, the largest figure reached over the past 15 years, said Raúl de la Nuez, who noted that such an achievement is due to an increase in imported products to help improve the quality of life of the Cuban people.

The foreign trade minister underscored the advancement made by the island following the most recent programs launched by the Cuban Revolution in the fields of energy, public health and transportation. Exports also contributed to that achievement and they are growing and diversifying with outstanding results in the areas of genetics and biotechnology.

Although Cuban traditional goods keep their presence in the world market, other products derived from scientific and technical research, as well as professional services, are experiencing growing world demand, said the Cuban Minister. He announced that 45 percent of Cuba's foreign trade exchange during that period included commercial operations with countries in the Americas, followed by Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Havana's International Fair promotes the island's foreign trade and setting up of joint ventures, said de la Nuez during the fair's inaugural ceremony, which was also attended by Government Minister Ricardo Cabrisas and Economy and Planning Minister José Luis Rodríguez. (Cubaminrex-RHC)

“FOR WORLD BALANCE”

January 28-30, 2008

January 28, 2008 will mark the 155th anniversary of the birth of Jose Marti, an exceptional figure in the history of the Americas, whose universal ideas, work and political and social aims make him also a far-reaching world personality.

For several years now, the celebration of this significant date has called together intellectuals, scientists, professors, students, journalists and writers – a broad range of personalities representing the most diverse trends of thought who are identified with common concerns that derive from the problems and challenges faced by humanity in our days.

Consequently, several important international meetings have been held: the First International Conference “FOR WORLD BALANCE” (2003); the International Symposium “JOSE MARTI FOR THE CULTURE OF NATURE” (2004) and the recent International Conference “WITH EVERYONE AND FOR THE WELL-BEING OF ALL” (2005), a trilogy of events that successfully discussed Martí’s ideas and their full validity.

In Marti´s work we find a whole diversity of motivations that allow us to connect it with the best of cultural thinking in Latin America, the Caribbean and the rest of the world.

With the purpose of further studying and discussing all these topics that derive from Martí’s ideas and continue developing them, the Marti Program, the Jose Marti Cultural Society and the Center for Marti Studies of the Republic of Cuba, under the valuable sponsorship of the UNESCO, the Organization of Iberian American States for Education, Science and Culture, the Cultural Fund of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) and other international entities and organizations, universities, research centers and related institutions call together the Second International Conference “FOR WORLD BALANCE” as part of the activities of the Jose Marti Project for World Solidarity and its World Council of distinguished personalities from all continents.

The following topics will be handled in commissions and panels:
1 – Martí – Poet, writer and journalist
2 – Social and political stature of José Martí
3 – The universality of José Martí
4 – Social imbalance in the world and its effects
5 – The spirituality of José Martí
6 – The environmental outlook in José Martí
7 – Mankind in the face of the global dilemmas
8 – Marti’s vision of our America and the United States
9 – The economic imbalances: consequences and alternatives

The Second International Conference “FOR WORLD BALANCE” will be held at the Havana International Conference Center on January 28, 29 and 30, 2008, on the occasion of Jose Marti´s 155th anniversary.
For the accomplishment of all organizational tasks and both the national and international dissemination of this event, as well as the drafting of the general and scientific programs and various participation forms, a Committee of Honor, an Organizing Committee, an International Preparatory Committee and a Scientific Committee will be timely appointed and their membership informed.

As in the case of its predecessor, the Second International Conference “FOR WORLD BALANCE” will be held under the motto OUR NATION IS HUMANITY, the immortal phrase in which the Apostle and National Hero of Cuba summed up his life-long commitment to the independence of his fatherland, to Latin American and Caribbean integration and to a clearly defined universal projection and vocation.

International Conference WITH ALL AND FOR THE GOOD OF ALL
Palacio de Convenciones, La Habana, 24-26 October, 2005

CALLING

Background

The World Program in tribute of José Martí carried out throughout the planet on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of that extraordinary personality of universal thought –which was sponsored by UNESCO, the Organization of Spanish-American States for Education, Science and Culture, as well as by a large number of universities, cultural institutions and non-governmental and political organizations from all continents– opened huge possibilities and created favorable and new conditions to enable the identification, establishment of relations and open exchanges among many personalities from the academic, scientific, cultural and political sectors, among others that have shown concern in the face of international events and are sensitive to endeavours aimed at social and human improvement and at rescuing life in the planet.

The best example of it was the International Conference ON WORLD EQUILIBRIUM as culmination of that world program in tribute to José Martí, which was celebrated in La Habana in January 2003 and attended by more than 600 delegates from nearly 60 countries, including relevant personalities of international prestige.

Based on that experience and in order to stimulate and systematize world forums for the widest possible debate of ideas among persons of good will all over the world, in accordance with the unifying, profound and deeply humanist thought of José Martí and with the purpose of further contributing to the consolidation of ethics, justice and solidarity in the conscience of public opinion, UNESCO approved the José Martí World Solidarity Project.

The International Colloquium FOR A CULTURE OF NATURE held in October 2004 was part of that scheme and those purposes. We are now calling for the International Conference WITH ALL AND FOR THE GOOD OF ALL, one of the main activities of the José Martí World Solidarity Project of UNESCO. Both forums are the continuation of the International Conference ON WORLD EQUILIBRIUM.

This trilogy of events fully entwines with Martí’s thought and its current validity, particularly in those aspects related to the need of searching for an equilibrium in international relations, society and in the individual; the importance of consolidating an ethics in the construction of a new relation between society and nature; in the enforcement of the principle of unity in replacement of the reactionary practice of division; the aim at achieving social participation in the face of the conservative practice of exclusion and segregation for reasons of race or genre and other forms of segregation; of stimulating and acknowledging the usefulness of virtue, the far-reaching role of education and culture in the forming of human beings with values that allow them to work in favor of common welfare and of becoming sensitive toward the best causes.

Attendants’ profile

The International Conference WITH ALL AND FOR THE GOOD OF ALL has been designed to meet as a multi-disciplinary forum, in such a way that it will be possible to broach with rigor and a spirit of good will the great and complex problems faced by modern mankind. Thus, this event will have a space for philosophers, historians, economists, lawyers and other specialists of the Social Sciences, as well as doctors, engineers, investigators of top technologies and artists as long as they are united in the common interest of social and human improvement; from university professors in the different branches of knowledge to activists of non-governmental organizations and politicians committed with a better destiny for women, men, children and old persons. In short, the idea that guided José Martí’s practice of working “with all and for the good of all” will find in the October 2005 congress we are calling for with sponsorship from UNESCO and other international and regional organizations a fertile space for the open and plural debate of ideas and everything that unites those who, in different specialties, tribunes and places, seek a better, sustainable world for all where peace, social justice, equity and a policy of solidarity prevail.
